SUMMARY:Toronto Network Hour - Virtual
DESCRIPTION:The CIOCAN Toronto Chapter Network Hour is a monthly peer discussion where technology leaders come together to share experiences\, compare approaches\, and discuss the challenges and opportunities shaping our organizations. These sessions are designed to be interactive\, practical\, and vendor-free\, allowing members to learn directly from one another. This month\, we'll be discussing Data Residency vs. Digital Sovereignty.Data residency has a fairly straightforward definition: where our data is physically stored. Digital sovereignty is less clear-cut. At its core\, sovereignty concerns which laws and governing authorities apply to that data\, including its access\, use and disclosure. But what does sovereignty actually mean in practice? When is Canadian hosting sufficient? Should the provider also be Canadian-owned? Does it matter where support staff are located\, who controls the encryption keys\, or whether a foreign authority could compel access? For CIOs\, these distinctions affect compliance\, vendor selection\, cost and how we govern risk. We'll start with a brief framing of the two terms\, then open the conversation:How have you defined residency and sovereignty in your organization? What have you done (or still need to do) from a governance perspective? What challenges\, trade-offs and lessons have you encountered? As always\, this is an informal conversation among peers\, with no presentations\, no sales pitches. It's an opportunity to compare experiences\, ask questions and learn from fellow CIOs. You don't need to have the answers or prepare anything in advance. As a Toronto Chapter member\, you should receive an invitation email to this virtual event. If you have not received the invitation and would like to attend\, please contact CIOCAN.Toronto.Chapter@ciocan.ca.
